Immersive Theatre
Over the years Mother Ultimate has been lucky enough to have worked with some of the most exciting names in immersive theatre, including Punchdrunk, Shunt and Nigel Barrett & Louise Mari, drawing on our expertise in playful and robust technological interventions to bring new forms of interaction to their award winning productions.
Notable projects include Audience of the Future, a UK Research & Innovation funded project with Punchdrunk and with support by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Mother Ultimate designed and delivered an intensive R&D program exploring the creative opportunities afforded by using a suite of technologies to track audience members around physical spaces. Working with macro and micro scale technologies including BLE tracking, RFID, Wifi-RTT, instant messaging, UWB, MQTT and sensors built into props and the environment, we led a diverse group of artists, designers and technologists in the creation of a collection of functional prototypes. This culminated in an hour-long performance designed to showcase the potentials (and limitations) of mixing live performance with game design and technology.
Another favourite was The Body with Nigel and Louise. The piece served to examine "our relationship to the body as a visual and physical construct, but one mediated both by personal experience and external factors". We were tasked with peppering the performance with discrete technologies designed to help stimulate senses and provoke responses from the unaware audience. These technologies included peripheral vision LED screens, sub-bass chairs, live heart-rate-to-sound conversion and projection mapping. The Body was awarded the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award and had a successful run at The Barbican.
